Transforming Sri Lankan Higher Education Through Service Design
NetCo Labs is a mobile application designed to bridge the gap between ideation and implementation in Sri Lanka’s university ecosystem. With over 490,000 students enrolled in state universities and approved higher education institutes (British Council, 2024), the potential for innovation is vast—yet largely untapped. This case study explores how NetCo Labs leverages service design, strategic foresight, and user experience to empower students, foster interdisciplinary collaboration, and connect academic projects to real-world impact.

The social challenge
Problem Statement
Sri Lankan university students produce thousands of innovative projects annually, yet a significant portion fail to progress beyond academic evaluations due to systemic barriers. Initial research identified the key challenges of:
Interdisciplinary Collaboration:
Students excel in single disciplines but lack cross-disciplinary knowledge and access to collaborators.
Resource Constraints:
Inadequate funding, mentorship, and infrastructure hinder project development.
Industry Disconnect:
Minimal engagement with private sector stakeholders limits practical application and market alignment.
Curricular Gaps:
Traditional education emphasizes theory over practical, entrepreneurial skills.
These barriers result in a loss of transformative potential, with ideas that could address societal needs remaining theoretical rather than actionable.
Opportunity Identified
Drawing from empathic research and stakeholder analysis, NetCo Labs identified a critical need for:
1.
A platform to connect students across disciplines and institutions.
2.
Mechanisms for peer-to-peer skill-sharing and mentorship.
3.
Pathways to industry engagement and real-world implementation.
By addressing these gaps, NetCo Labs aims to unlock Sri Lanka’s latent innovation capacity, aligning with global trends like digital transformation and interdisciplinary learning.

Strategic Roadmap
Phase 1 (Launch - Year 1)
- Recruit 1,000 students via organic channels (e.g., student unions, university webmails).
- Build an initial project portfolio and introduce ethical advertising.
- Establish a skill pool of 200 "Master Bees."
Phase 2 (Growth - Year 2)
- Scale to 10,000 users and 2,000 skill pool members.
- Open to external stakeholders, charging 5% on hires and 2.5% on investments.
- Target 150 investor-backed projects.
Phase 3 (Sustainability - Year 3)
- Reach 20,000+ users, 5,000 skill pool members, and 3,000+ projects.
- Reduce fees to maximize student earnings, expand regionally or enhance features.
Channels
Online:
Social media (e.g., university pages), digital ads, LMS integration.

A/B testing and QA to optimize navigation and engagement pre-launch.
Userflow
Key Screens
Live Project
The team members can view all the live updates on the progress of the project through the live project room. The team players also get to live chat with each other, assign tasks, track the progress of each task and plan the project efficiently. Once the team leader marks the project as completed it will be uploaded to Netcolabs project hive where the investors could view all the uploaded projects.
Create Meet Up - Post a Question
When a student (Learner) needs to learn a new skill or to get some advice from a person following a specific subject area, they can post their inquiries on the platform. Once they post it the app will reach out to the students that matches with the requirement and this who are interested can offer to help.
Live Meet Up - Create Meet Up
The Learner can view the list of the educators who has shown the interest to help and select the best candidate for him to learn from. They can then live chat through the Meetup room and schedule a meet up at any convenient date, time and a venue of their choice.
The Netco Lab Hive
All the new ideas the students bring to the platform will be added to our platform’s portfolio - The Netco Lab Hive. The NetCo Labs Hive which consists of the completed projects and ongoing projects, will be directed to the companies and Investors who are willing to invest in new ideas.
By the end of their University life students will be leaving NetCo Labs, with the right skill set, and a proper training in adaptability and skill integration. Working with outside companies help these students to be versatile and uniquely position themselves in the outside market. Also, another portion of the students will have their ideas picked up by investors and funded or started their own businesses. And this way we’ll be giving wings to thousands of innovative ideas and empowering the local student communities.

Gamified Concept
The app is designed with a gamified concept in order to let the students actively engage with the app and also to give them a more interesting user experience. Here the students will be rated, leveled up and also awarded badges, based on their performance within the platform (Participation on projects, answering questions, learning from others etc.).
Once a student reaches the highest level he will be opened for recruiters outside the university community. These recruiters can pay the app a certain fee and get the premium version, where they can post their ideas and projects or even jobs and recruit suitable students. Thus the app is designed in a way that the students can sharpen their knowledge and skills by learning from their own community and then get exposed to the outer world as a person with a diversified skill set.
